Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project

NESTS: Neighbors Ensuring Sea Turtle Survival

Businesses and Residents on Tybee Island can help protect sea turtles that nest on our neighborhood beaches. The life of a sea turtle can be rather challenging and we hope that you can help keep the neighborhood safe for nesting turtles and ensure that newborn hatchlings get off to a good start!

What can you do to help?
The Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project staff and volunteers are coordinating simple activities designed for businesses and individual homeowners living on Tybee Island that will have a direct benefit to helping the survival of sea turtles and protecting their nesting habitat. What better way is there to get to know your neighbors than working to build community interest and support, that gathers everyone together to work toward an important conservation priority for the state of Georgia – helping to save sea turtles one NEST at a time!

It's easy! We want you to become more familiar with sea turtles and some of the challenges they are facing through a Partner Certification. As a Partner, the activities are geared toward sharing information, becoming more informed, and making the right choices to assist nesting turtles and hatchlings. We will give you a list of items to choose from and all you need to do is complete them to become a NESTS Partner.

Whether it is working to turn off lights that shine on the beach, learning more about sea turtles from a resident expert, or reducing the amount of litter found on our beaches, you will be part of an inspired community that is ensuring the survival of sea turtles. Once you are a NESTS Partner, we will send you a decal and certificate that you can proudly display to show your commitment!

How do you get started?

The NESTS program was originally developed by the Carribean Conservation Corps and implemented on the Barrier Island in Southern Brevard County and Northern Indian River County of Florida. The CCC has generously allowed us to use their ideas to assist the Lights Out Campaign on Tybee.
