Nesting
Season 2007
Sea turtle
nesting season along the Georgia coast officially begins
in May each year. Trained volunteers and
TIMSC staff complete dawn patrol each morning from May 1
through the end of August. Dawn patrol requires
walking the full length of Tybee Beach starting at 6 am
to look for turtle tracks left by nesting females the
night before. |

Nest 1,
found June 4th, near 2nd street, is
expected to
hatch between July
24 and August 3.

Volunteer, discovered the first crawl of the season on
Tybee. The turtle had emerged just after
high tide leaving a classic crawl with just one body
pit. In addition, Pat also found the first false
crawl of the season just south of the nest.

Nest
2,
found June 16th, north of the lighthouse in front of
Lighthouse Point Condominiums. It is
expected to
hatch between August 5 and August 15.
The nest was found by the
Department of Public Works, a big thanks goes out to
them. The nest was located above the highest tide
line so luckily it did not have to be relocated.

Nest
3,
found June 19th, is
expected to
hatch between August 8th and August 18th.
The nest was found
by Tricia Tucker. The turtle did not crawl above
the highest tide line, putting the nest at risk for
washout. The nest was relocated to the 10th Street
area.

Nests on Tybee are
relocated when they are found below the high spring tide
line. Each egg is carefully removed from the
original site and placed in a bucket lined with sand.
A new location is chosen based on the tide line, dunes,
and light issues in the area. The new nest is dug
to be similar in depth, and each egg is delicately
placed in the new site. |

NEST
4
was
found by our Super Volunteer
Cheryl Tilton, on June 30th. This nest was located in the wrack
on North Beach. The nest was relocated inland and
north approximately 200 yards, in front of North Beach
Grill, to protect it from high tide overwash.
This nest had 86 eggs and the estimated hatch date is
between August 20th and August 30th. Pictures to
come!!
