Indoor Classes

Center Tour and Touch Tank Presentation (30 minutes)
After being introduced to live marine animals in our touch tank, students observe and touch the animals, then explore the Science Center which features aquariums of species indigenous to the Georgia coast, and exotic species from other oceans.  Center exhibits feature sharks, marine mammals, sea turtles, shells, reptiles, and salt marsh.

Dock Lab: Invertebrate Marine Animals & Other Sea Life (30 minutes)
Students use microscopes to get a “close up” look at the organisms that live underneath a floating dock.  Invertebrates are identified using a dock guide with instruction and discussion.  Students may sketch organisms to improve observation skills.  Classification of "fowling community" organisms is included.

Mollusk Dissection: Squid Lab (1 hour)
Dissect a squid to learn about the anatomy, adaptations, and behavior of this magnificent mollusk. Each student dissects a squid with activity guide and personal and group instruction.  Note: Additional fee

Fish Printing and Fish Anatomy (1 hour)
Students learn to identify basic parts of a fish and then participate in “Gyotaku,” the art of fish printing. Students create works of art by painting a variety of fish replicas to print on t-shirts.  Note: Additional fee, students must provide their own t-shirt.

Let’s Meet A Fish (30 minutes)
The unique characteristics of fish are demonstrated as one student “becomes a fish” with the help of the class.  A costume of fish fins, scales, eye lenses, and other "fishy" characteristics are used to help students learn about fish anatomy, shapes, coloration, behavior, and survival.  A coloring activity lets students create a fish to take home.
